Climate change minister Nick Hurd has told a committee of MPs that disregarding the potential benefits of shale gas development would be “irresponsible to future generations”.

In comments in Parliament to the business, energy and industrial strategy select committee, reported by The Times, Hurd said that he viewed shale gas through the “lens of energy security”, though he recognised the importance of reassuring the public about its effect on the environment.

Hurd added: “Because we have seen the impact on the United States, we have seen what it is capable of doing, we owe it to ourselves to find out whether something similar can happen in the UK.”
