On Tuesday 20th December campaigners lost their legal challenge to block fracking by Third Energy at its Kirby Misperton site situated in North Yorkshire.
Green group have raised environmental concern regarding fracking, which is backed by the government as a way to lower cost and reduce foreign imports.
Frack Free Ryedale and Friends of the Earth contested that North Yorkshire County Council had not given due consideration to the environmental impact of burning gas on climate change when it agreed approval for the scheme. However, Mrs Justice Lang ruled climate change had been considered as a factor in the council’s decision, and that therefore the development could go ahead.
Third Energy chief executive Rasik Valand said: “The permission places a great obligation on Third Energy to prove that we can carry out the test fracks in the same safe, discreet and environmentally sensitive way that we have conducted our gas exploration and energy generation activities over the past two decades.”
