State aid approval has been given by The European Commission for the conversion of a third unit at Drax from coal to biomass.
It was announced on 19th December, after an investigation was launched in January this year into the government supporting the conversion with a contract for difference (a scheme to support the distribution of renewable energy). The investigation concluded that the contributions made by the project in terms of increasing the share if renewable energy produced in the UK outweighed the potential distortions of competitions.
Drax has confirmed that the unit will be operating as fully converted biomass unit in the coming days, as it was previously operating as a co-firing unit under the Renewables Obligation. Drax will also look to convert other units should it secure other support.
