National Grid has confirmed that the risk of blackouts has fallen and revealed an improved capacity margin for 2016-2017 of 6.6% instead of the 5.5% predicted in the summer.

One of the main reasons for this increase in the provisional margin for the winter is the added generation capacity that has returned to the market at Eggborough power station situated in East Yorkshire as well as predicted reduced interconnector exports to the Republic of Ireland. This among other things, this has improved the energy security outlook for winter 2016/17 and will hopefully calm prices for the near-term months.
