Statistics released by the government on 29 September have revealed slowing progress in rolling out smart meters to business customers.
Smart meters can digitally send meter readings to energy suppliers. This can ensure more accurate energy bills and enable businesses to better understand their energy usage.
The figures confirmed that in the second quarter of 2016 16,400 smart and advanced meters were installed in smaller non-domestic sites by large energy suppliers. This represents a 13% decrease in overall smart and advanced meter installations compared to the first quarter.
At 30 June 2016, there were 577,000 (48,300 gas and 528,800 electricity) non-domestic smart and advanced meters operating in smart mode or with advanced functionality by large energy suppliers. This represents around one in five of all non-domestic meters operated by large energy suppliers.
There are now over 4.2mn smart and advanced meters operating across homes and businesses in Great Britain, by both large and small energy suppliers.
