The government has announced it is to close the energy and climate change (DECC) department and merge it with the existing business department to create an expanded department of business, energy and industrial strategy.

A DECC spokesperson was reported as saying the new department would retain all of DECC’s responsibilities, including the climate change portfolio. It was also announced on 14 July that Greg Clark had been appointed as business, energy and industrial strategy secretary. Clark was previously communities and local government secretary between 2015-2016 and was also shadow energy and climate change secretary between 2008-2010. Energy minister Andrea Leadsom has been appointed environment, food and rural affairs secretary.

Commenting on his appointment Clark said: “I am thrilled to have been appointed to lead this new department charged with delivering a comprehensive industrial strategy, leading government’s relationship with business, furthering our world-class science base, delivering affordable, clean energy and tackling climate change.”
