The department of energy and climate change (DECC) has outlined its priority objectives for 2015-20 as part of its single departmental plan.
Published on 19 February, the department said it aimed to deliver an energy infrastructure fit for the 21st century, meaning that energy would be both cheap and clean. It would seek to meet its objectives by nurturing competition and supporting innovation in new technologies. The department said it remained committed to achieving an 80% reduction in the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and would do so in a way that ensured value for money for households and businesses.
Finally, it was also re-confirmed that by the end of 2020 every household and small business will have been offered smart electricity and gas meters giving them accurate bills, up to date information on their energy use and the ability to switch energy suppliers more easily.
